The Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education has officially released the gazette notification for the First Efficiency Bar Examination (2026) for officers of the Sri Lanka Teacher Service serving in all National and Provincial schools across the island.
The official media release issued by the Ministry’s Media Unit outlines the structure of the upcoming examinations, application timelines, and self-study resources for teachers.
Key Highlights & Examination Structure
To qualify for professional promotions, teachers are required to clear three Efficiency Bar (EB) examinations consisting of a total of 10 modules. The breakdown is as follows:
- First Efficiency Bar Exam (4 Modules): Applies to teachers directly recruited to Class 3 Grade II, Class 3 Grade I, and Class 2 Grade II of the Sri Lanka Teacher Service.
- Second Efficiency Bar Exam (3 Modules): Applies to teachers in Class 2 Grade II (Step 1) and Class 2 Grade II (Step 3). (Gazette to be released in the future).
- Third Efficiency Bar Exam (3 Modules): Applies to teachers in Class 2 Grade I. (Gazette to be released in the future).
Important Note: The gazette notification issued on June 19, 2026, strictly applies only to the First Efficiency Bar Examination.
Application Timeline
Eligible teachers can submit their applications online through the official website of the Department of Examinations, Sri Lanka.

- Application Closing Date: July 17, 2026
- Scheduled Exam Month: September 2026

As these restructured Efficiency Bar examinations are being conducted for the first time, the Ministry has made the official syllabus and learning materials available online.
