The Government of Sri Lanka has decided to declare Wednesdays as a holiday for government employees starting from 18 March 2026, in view of the ongoing fuel shortage in the country.

According to the Commissioner General of Essential Services, the decision was taken after considering the current availability of fuel and the urgent need to reduce travel and fuel consumption nationwide.

Authorities stated that the measure aims to limit daily commuting by public sector workers, thereby easing the pressure on limited fuel supplies and helping manage the current situation.

In addition to government employees, all Government schools, universities, and courts will also observe Wednesdays as a holiday until further notice. The Commissioner General further stated that all government events will be suspended during this period as part of the effort to reduce travel and fuel usage.

Private sector institutions have also been requested to follow the same practice where possible, in order to support the national effort to conserve fuel.
