The Government of Sri Lanka has decided to declare Wednesdays as a holiday for government employees starting from 18 March 2026, in response to the ongoing fuel shortage affecting the country.
According to the Commissioner General of Essential Services, the decision was taken after carefully considering the current availability of fuel and the need to reduce travel and fuel consumption across the country.
Authorities stated that the primary objective of this measure is to minimize daily commuting by public sector workers, thereby reducing pressure on the limited fuel supplies. By limiting travel on one working day each week, the government expects to ease the demand for fuel and help manage the current supply constraints.
The announcement comes as the government continues to implement several measures to cope with the challenges in the national fuel supply system.
Further details regarding the implementation of the Wednesday holiday policy, including instructions for government institutions and essential services, are expected to be issued by the relevant authorities in the coming days.
