The Ministry of Education has officially announced a revision to the special allowance paid to school principals in Sri Lanka under the 2026 Budget Proposals. The new allowance revision will be effective from 01 April 2026 and aims to recognize the valuable service of principals while improving their financial benefits.
📢 Ministry Circular on Principals’ Special Allowance
This revision has been issued with reference to:
- Ministry of Education Circular No. 16/2017
- Circular No. ED/04/60/01/5.5/2017
According to the 2026 Budget Proposal (Chapter 33.9), the special allowance granted to principals serving in permanent posts has been increased by Rs. 1,500.

👨🏫 Who is Eligible?
The revised allowance is applicable to:
- Officers in Grade III, II, and I of the Sri Lanka Principals’ Service
- Principals serving in permanent principal positions
- Officers officially appointed to act in principal posts
⚠️ Important Instructions in the Circular
The Ministry has further instructed that:
- The allowance must be paid according to the Establishments Code
- All Financial Regulations must be strictly followed
- Only officers who are officially eligible should receive this allowance
