Limited Competitive Examination for Recruitment to Grade III of SLTS in the Irrigation Department – 2026

The Irrigation Department has officially issued a gazette notification calling online applications from qualified departmental employees for the Limited Competitive Examination for recruitment to Grade III posts in the Sri Lanka Technological Service (SLTS).

The examination will be conducted by the Commissioner General of Examinations in the District of Colombo in February 2027. Salary Scale & Service Conditions

• Service Category: Supervisory Management Assistant Technical.
• Grade III Salary Scale: MN 3-2025: Rs. 52,250 – 10×800 – 11×1,190 – 10×1,320 – 10×1,350 – Rs. 100,040/= per month (in terms of Schedule I of Public Administration Circular 10/2025).
• Training Grade Provisions: Recruits in the Training Grade remain on their previous salary scale during the one-year training, receiving an annual allowance equal to the initial increment of the recruitment grade of SLTS until passing the qualifying departmental exam.
• Tenure & Pension: Permanent and pensionable, subject to future policy decisions by the Government regarding pension schemes.
• Acting Period: Recruits to Grade III serve an acting period of one year before permanent confirmation.
• Age Limit: Not applicable (Limited departmental competition).

Required Qualifications

• Educational Qualifications: Passed the G.C.E. (Ordinary Level) Examination in six (06) subjects with credit passes in Language or Literature, Science, and Mathematics in not more than two sittings.
• Experience Requirement: At least 10 years of active and satisfactory service experience in the relevant technical field in a permanent departmental post in a primary or higher service category within the Irrigation Department.
• Active Continuous Service: Must have completed at least 05 years of continuous satisfactory service immediately preceding the closing date in a permanent post certified by the Head of Department.
• Vocational Qualifications:
  • Draughtsman / Soil Cartographer: One-year full-time training course certificate in draughtsmanship from a Government-recognized technical college.
  • Drilling Assistant / Hydrological Assistant / Hydrological Field Assistant / Research Assistant (Eng. Materials) / Civil Engineering Material Surveyor / Research Assistant (Hydraulics): National Certificate in Technology (NCT – Civil) 3-year course from a recognized technical college, or National Certificate for Industrial Technologies in the relevant field.
  • Soil Surveyor / Research Assistant (General): Certificate course in Agriculture or Chemistry from a Government-approved institution (3 years part-time or at least 9 months full-time).
  • Mechanical Foreman: National Certificate in Technology (NCT – Mechanical) 3-year course from a recognized technical college.

Written Examination Structure & Syllabus

The examination will be conducted in Sinhala and Tamil media. Candidates must secure at least 40% in each question paper to qualify for selection:

• Intelligence Test: Assesses logical and analytical reasoning and decision-making capabilities.
• Subject Technical Test: Specific to the designated field applied for (e.g., draughtsmanship drawing principles, basic civil engineering, soil chemistry, analytical chemistry, hydrology, or workshop maintenance mechanics).
