Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya has announced that the GCE Ordinary Level (O/L) examination in 2029 will be held under a newly reformed national curriculum. Guidelines for the reform process are expected to be released by August 2025.
The phased rollout of the new curriculum will begin in 2026, starting with Grades 1 and 6. Grade 10 will follow in 2028, ensuring that the 2029 O/L examination aligns fully with the updated educational standards. Additionally, vocational education will be introduced from Grade 9 onwards to broaden student pathways.
Addressing a session at the National Institute of Education, the Prime Minister highlighted five key pillars of the reform agenda: curriculum development, teacher training, administrative support, evaluation systems, and community engagement.
She also called on education authorities to prioritise not only the effective implementation of the reforms but also continuous monitoring and evaluation to ensure long-term success.
