The Department of Motor Traffic (DMT) has officially called for applications from qualified Sri Lankan citizens for the Written Examination for the Registration of Driving Instructors – 2026. As announced in the Extraordinary Gazette No. 1939/4 dated 2 November 2015, eligible candidates can submit their applications until 21 August 2026. The written examination is scheduled to be held in Colombo in September 2026.
✅ Eligibility Criteria
All qualifications must be met by the closing date of applications (21 August 2026):
- Citizenship: Applicants must be citizens of Sri Lanka.
- Age Limit: Must be between 23 and 65 years of age (born on or between 21 August 1961 and 21 August 2003).
- Educational & Professional Qualifications: Passed G.C.E. (O/L) in no more than two sittings in six subjects, including Mathematics and Sinhala or Tamil, with at least two Credit passes (or equivalent); OR hold an NVQ Level 3 certificate in Automobile Mechanic or a related field recognized by TVEC; OR possess 5 years of experience as an Assistant Driving Instructor prior to the application date.
- Driving License Experience: Must hold a valid driving license for the requested instructor category (Class A, B, or C) issued at least 5 years prior to the application deadline.
- Medical Fitness: A valid medical certificate issued by the National Transport Medical Institute (NTMI) certifying fitness to drive and train drivers in the relevant vehicle classes is required.

The written examination is administered in Sinhala, Tamil, or English. Syllabus coverage includes the Motor Traffic Act, the Highway Code, teaching and instructional methodologies, safe driving techniques, professional ethics, first aid, mechanical and technical knowledge, and road safety principles.
📝 Application Process & Exam Fee
- Prepare the application strictly using the specimen form provided in the official Gazette notice, on A4 size paper. Complete it in the candidate’s chosen exam language.
- Send the completed application via Registered Post on or before 21 August 2026, to the address below.
- Pay the examination fee of LKR 3,000/- at any Post/Sub-Post Office island-wide under Revenue Head 20-03-02-14 of the Commissioner General of Motor Traffic, and paste the original payment receipt securely onto the application.

🎯 Selection Procedure
- Candidates scoring at least 40% in each paper will be called for an interview to verify certificates and original qualifications.
- Selected candidates will then undergo a practical assessment on driver instruction and training.
- Upon successful completion of a prescribed training course, official Driving Instructor Licenses will be issued.
