The Government of Sri Lanka has issued a special gazette notification amending the public holiday schedule for the upcoming Vesak week in 2026.
According to the directive issued by the Minister of Public Administration, Home Affairs, Provincial Councils, and Local Government, the holiday previously allocated for early June has been adjusted to ensure the national religious observances are correctly synchronized.
Key Details of the Notification:
- Vesak Week: The government has declared the period from May 27, 2026, to June 02, 2026, as Vesak Week.
- Holiday Amendment: While a public holiday was originally set for June 02, 2026, this new order clarifies that the public holiday should instead be recognized on May 31, 2026.
- Legal Authority: The order was made by Professor A.M.A. Abeysinghe under the powers vested by Section 10 (1) (b) of the Holidays Act, No. 29 of 1971.
