Professional Analysis of GCE O/L Grading Trends (2025/2026)

This year’s examination saw a slight increase in competition due to the stabilization of the academic calendar. Based on data from the Department of Examinations, here are the key trends:

  1. Higher Pass Rates Expected in Commerce Stream: Initial feedback suggests that subjects like Accounting and Business Studies saw moderate difficulty, potentially leading to higher distinction rates compared to 2024.
  2. Science Stream Volatility: Due to the emphasis on practical exams completed on April 30th, the grading curve for combined science is expected to be tighter.
  3. Impact on A/L Selections: With over 382,249 school candidates, the competition for limited spots in popular A/L streams (Physical Sciences, Biology, and Commerce) will be intense. Students with 7-9 ‘A’ passes will have a significant advantage.

What Do the Grades Mean for Your A/L Pathway?

  • 9A’s – 8A’s: Eligible for top national schools and competitive streams like Physical Sciences or Engineering Technology.
  • 7A’s – 6A’s: Strong chance for Biology or Commerce streams in provincial schools.
  • 5A’s – 3A’s: Eligible for Arts, or Technology streams, or consider vocational training via NVQ.

What to Do After Checking Your O/L Results?

Once you have your results, do not panic. Follow these 3 steps for a successful future:

1. Apply for Re-correction (If Necessary)

If your results are not what you expected, the Department of Examinations usually opens re-correction applications within two weeks of the result release. Watch this space for the official link to apply.

2. Plan Your Advanced Level (A/L) Stream

Choose your A/L stream based on your O/L results and your career aspirations.

  • Science (Bio/Physical): Requires strong passes in Math & Science.
  • Commerce: Requires at least a Credit pass in Accounting or Business Studies.
  • Arts: Requires good passes in language and humanities subjects.
  • Technology: The growing field for engineering minds.

3. Explore Alternative Pathways

Not happy with your results? Consider NVQ certificates, Diploma programs, or repeating the O/L exam next year. Teachmore.lk offers resources for all these pathways.
