Applications are now open for the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Tamil and Tamil Language Teaching Degree Programme (2026/2027) offered by the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the Open University of Sri Lanka (OUSL). Eligible applicants can submit their applications on or before 15 July 2026.
This four-year minimum duration degree programme is designed for individuals who wish to enter the field of Tamil language teaching, upgrade their professional qualifications, or obtain a recognized honours degree in Tamil and Tamil Language Teaching through the Open and Distance Learning (ODL) system.
Who Can Apply?
The programme is suitable for:
- Individuals wishing to become Tamil language teachers (First Language or Second Language).
- Teachers serving in primary, secondary, and higher education institutions who seek professional advancement.
- Candidates interested in obtaining an honours degree qualification in Tamil and Tamil Language Teaching.
- Tamil-speaking individuals who wish to earn a university-recognized honours degree.
Entry Requirements
Applicants should be above 18 years of age and satisfy one of the following requirements:
- Three passes at the G.C.E. Advanced Level with Tamil as a subject.
- Three passes at the G.C.E. Advanced Level in the Tamil medium and a minimum ‘B’ grade for Tamil and Tamil Literature at the G.C.E. Ordinary Level.
- Successful completion of the National Diploma in Teaching Tamil Language offered by National Colleges of Education.
- Any other equivalent or higher qualification accepted by the Senate of the Open University of Sri Lanka.
Programme Objectives
The degree programme aims to:
- Enhance knowledge of Tamil Language, Tamil Literature, and related disciplines.
- Develop professional teaching competencies and positive classroom practices.
- Prepare graduates to teach Tamil up to post-secondary education level.
- Provide knowledge and skills required for teaching Tamil as a Second Language.
- Promote the integration of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in teaching and learning.
- Improve translation and interpretation skills involving Tamil.
- Promote social cohesion through Tamil and Sinhala language learning.
- Encourage action research in Tamil language education.
Mode of Study
The programme is conducted through the Open and Distance Learning (ODL) methodology. Students will receive self-learning course materials and participate in interactive learning sessions conducted mainly during weekends.
Continuous Assessments and end-of-course examinations or assignments will be used for evaluation. Final grades are calculated using:
- 40% Continuous Assessment Marks
- 60% Final Examination Marks
Students must obtain at least 35% in the final examination for Continuous Assessment marks to be considered.
