National Institute of Education (NIE) Sign Language Programmes 2026 Overview

The Department of Inclusive Education at the National Institute of Education (NIE), Sri Lanka has officially invited online applications for the Diploma in Sign Language (SLQF Level 3) and the Certificate Course in Sign Language (SLQF Level 2) for the 2026 academic intake.

Designed to equip educators, officers, and community workers with the competencies needed to understand, communicate, interpret, and teach sign language, these one-year weekend programmes combine distance learning modules with hands-on practical sessions conducted at the NIE Maharagama premises and designated special education schools.

ජාතික අධ්‍යාපන ආයතනයේ අන්තර්කරණ අධ්‍යාපන දෙපාර්තමේන්තුව මගින් මෙහෙයවනු ලබන සංඥා භාෂාව පිළිබඳ ඩිප්ලෝමා (SLQF Level 3) සහ සහතික පත්‍ර (SLQF Level 2) පාඨමාලා සඳහා සුදුසුකම්ලත් අයදුම්කරුවන්ගෙන් මාර්ගගත ක්‍රමවේදය ඔස්සේ අයදුම්පත් කැඳවා ඇත. සති අන්තයේ පැවැත්වෙන මෙම එක් අවුරුදු පාඨමාලා සඳහා අයදුම්පත් යොමු කිරීමේ අවසාන දිනය 2026 නොවැම්බර් 30 වේ.

இலங்கை தேசிய கல்வி நிறுவகத்தின் (NIE) உள்ளடக்கக் கல்வித் திணைக்களத்தினால் நடாத்தப்படும் சைகை மொழி டிப்ளோமா (SLQF Level 3) மற்றும் சைகை மொழி சான்றிதழ் (SLQF Level 2) கற்கைநெறிகளுக்காக தகுதியானவர்களிடமிருந்து இணையவழி மூலமாக விண்ணப்பங்கள் கோரப்பட்டுள்ளன. வார இறுதி நாட்களில் நடாத்தப்படும் இக்கற்கைநெறிகளுக்கு விண்ணப்பிப்பதற்கான இறுதித் திகதி 2026 நவம்பர் 30 ஆகும்.

Course Details, Medium & Delivery Mode

• Programmes Offered:
  • Diploma in Sign Language (SLQF Level 3)
  • Certificate Course in Sign Language (SLQF Level 2)
• Duration & Schedule: 01 Year (Weekend classes combining distance mode modules and practical contact sessions).
• Practical Training Centers: National Institute of Education (Maharagama) and selected Special Education Schools.
• Medium of Instruction: Sinhala Medium.
• Selection Method: Eligible applicants will be selected based on an interview.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must satisfy the specific entry requirements as of November 30, 2026:

• 1. Diploma in Sign Language (SLQF Level 3):
  • Passed the G.C.E. Advanced Level (A/L) Examination; AND
  • Must be a Teacher in a Government or Government-Approved School or Pirivena, OR
  • An officer serving in the Sri Lanka Teacher Educators’ Service (SLTES) or Teacher Advisory Service, OR
  • An officer in the Sri Lanka Principals’ Service or Sri Lanka Education Administrative Service (SLEAS), OR
  • An academic staff officer of the National Institute of Education, OR
  • An officer/teacher serving in an institution, school, or department working directly with children with special education needs; AND
  • Age must be below 55 years as of November 30, 2026.
• 2. Certificate Course in Sign Language (SLQF Level 2):
  • Age must be below 55 years as of November 30, 2026; AND
  • Passed the G.C.E. Ordinary Level (O/L) Examination; AND
  • Must be currently employed or engaged in a school, institution, or department dedicated to children with special educational needs.

3. Select the relevant programme (Diploma or Certificate Course in Sign Language) and fill in all personal, academic, and professional employment details.
4. Pay the non-refundable Application Fee of Rs. 200.00 securely using your Credit or Debit Card.
5. Submit your application online on or before November 30, 2026. Only online submissions will be entertained.
