Colombo, Oct. 17, 2025 – President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has announced that the forthcoming national budget will include provisions to increase the allowance paid to teachers serving in rural schools across the country.
Speaking at the 28th Convention of the Ceylon Teachers’ Union (CTU), the President said the decision comes in response to the significant challenges faced by educators working in remote and underserved areas.
“Steps will be taken in the upcoming budget to increase the allowance paid to teachers in rural schools,” President Dissanayake stated, addressing the CTU membership directly.
The move underscores the government’s commitment to reducing geographical disparities in teacher incentives and improving retention rates among qualified educators in less accessible regions.
According to the President, the specific details of the allowance revision will be finalized following consultations with teacher trade unions, ensuring stakeholder participation in shaping the policy.
The national budget, typically presented towards the end of the year, is expected to outline broader reforms and financial measures for the education sector.
The announcement follows continued appeals from teacher unions for better financial benefits and the resolution of long-standing salary anomalies affecting the profession.
