The University Grants Commission (UGC) of Sri Lanka, in collaboration with Australia’s Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT University), has announced the opening of applications for their prestigious Joint PhD Programme for 2025. This initiative aims to strengthen the research capabilities of Sri Lankan academics by offering up to 11 fully funded PhD scholarships across diverse disciplines.
Programme Highlights
- Partnership: The programme is a collaboration between RMIT (ranked 123rd globally in QS World Rankings 2025) and four leading Sri Lankan universities:
- University of Peradeniya (UoP)
- University of Moratuwa (UoM)
- University of Ruhuna (UoR)
- University of Sri Jayewardenepura (USJP)
- Structure: Candidates will spend 2–2.5 years in Sri Lanka and up to 12 months at RMIT’s Melbourne campus, benefiting from co-supervision by academics from both institutions.
- Scholarship: Successful applicants will receive:
- Full tuition coverage (approx. AUD 80,000) for 3.5 years.
- A living stipend (approx. AUD 36,000) during their stay in Australia.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must be permanent academic staff at a UGC-affiliated institution, hold a relevant Bachelor’s degree (1st or 2nd class upper division) or a Master’s degree (SLQF Level 10+), and demonstrate English proficiency (IELTS 6.5+). Research proposals should align with RMIT’s published projects or address the candidate’s own research interests.
