The Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education has announced the first-ever National Level Festival of Foreign Languages 2025.
Scheduled to run from August to November 2025, the festival operates under the theme “One World, Many Voices.” It is open to students in Grades 10 through 13 from government schools, government-approved private schools, and Pirivena institutions across Sri Lanka.
The festival will feature competitions in six languages: Japanese, Korean, Chinese, French, German, and Hindi. Students will compete in three core events designed to test comprehensive language skills:
- Dictation: Evaluating listening comprehension and accurate writing.
- Creative Writing: Challenging students to craft original stories or dialogues based on given pictures or prompts.
- Oratory (Impromptu): Testing public speaking, persuasion, and quick-thinking abilities.
A Two-Tiered Competition Structure
The festival will be conducted in two stages:
- Provincial Level (1st – 31st August 2025): Competitions will be held within each province. The first and second-place winners in each event, language, and grade category will qualify for the national finals.
- National Level (15th September – 25th November 2025): Provincial winners will compete for the top national honors.
Encouraging Participation and Fairness
The Ministry has issued detailed guidelines to ensure fairness and standardization across all events. Key instructions include:
- A maximum of two students per school per event, with each participant limited to two events.
- All participants must wear standard school uniforms, with identifying features covered to ensure anonymous and unbiased judging.
- A panel of qualified judges will oversee events, and their decisions will be final.
