The Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education has announced that applications are now open for the Chinese Government Scholarships Programme 2026/27, offering 10 fully funded postgraduate opportunities for Sri Lankan students.
These scholarships—awarded by the People’s Republic of China—cover Master’s and PhD degree programmes across a wide range of academic fields.
Eligible Study Areas
Selected candidates will be able to pursue postgraduate studies in recognized Chinese universities in fields such as:
- Science & Engineering
- Agriculture
- Medicine
- Economics & Management
- Education
- Law
- History & Literature
- Philosophy
- Fine Arts

General Eligibility Requirements
For Master’s Degree Applicants
- Must be a Sri Lankan citizen.
- Age below 35 years as at 06.12.2025.
- A 4-year Bachelor’s Degree (SLQF 6) with First Class or Second Class Upper from a UGC-recognized university.
- Must be in good health.
For PhD Applicants
- Must be a Sri Lankan citizen.
- Age below 40 years as at 06.12.2025.
- A 4-year Bachelor’s Degree (SLQF 6) with First Class or Second Class Upper, and a Master’s Degree (SLQF 9/10/11).
- Must be in good health.
Government sector employees must apply through their Head of Institution.
Language Requirements
- English-medium programmes: IELTS/TOEFL or other acceptable proficiency certificates required.
- Chinese-medium programmes: HSK Level 04 is compulsory.
Applicants must also meet specific university-level admission criteria.
Scholarship Benefits
The Chinese Government will provide:
- Full tuition fee waiver
- Free university dormitory or accommodation subsidy
- Monthly stipend:
- CNY 3,000 (Master’s)
- CNY 3,500 (PhD)
- Comprehensive medical insurance (CNY 800 per year)
Note: Airfare to and from China must be self-funded.
Important Notes
- Scholarship conditions may change as per Chinese Government policies.
- Declining an offer after selection may affect future scholarship eligibility.
- Extensions beyond the awarded duration will not be recommended.
