The Ministry of Education has announced significant amendments to the ‘Suraksha Student Insurance Scheme’ through a new circular (No. 29/2024(I)) issued on October 16, 2025. These revisions, effective from September 01, 2025 , aim to expand student benefits and enhance financial support for low-income families.

Increased Financial Aid and Extended Term

The most notable changes include:

  • Parental Death Benefit Eligibility Raised: The annual income threshold for receiving the Parental Death Benefit has been increased from Rs. 180,000/= to Rs. 240,000/= for families not covered under the ‘Aswasuma’ scheme.
  • Scheme Period Extended: The duration of the scheme has been adjusted from July 01, 2024, to June 30, 2027, to now run from July 01, 2024, to August 31, 2027.

Enhanced Healthcare Coverage

The amendments introduce several new health benefits, specifically targeting long-term and serious conditions:

  • New Equipment Coverage: Costs for a Scoliosis Brace (for spine deformity correction) and Hearing Aids (recommended by an ENT surgeon) are now included.
  • Vision Correction Devices (Visual Aids): The maximum annual reimbursement for spectacles has been capped at Rs. 10,000/=.
  • Long-Term Medication for Severe Illnesses: Expenses for long-term medication for various severe diseases, including Epilepsy, Rheumatoid arthritis, and Systemic lupus erythematosis, are now covered.
  • Additional Diseases Covered: New conditions like Encephalitis , Thalassemia , and Pneumothorax have been added to the list of covered medical conditions.

Claims Process Adjustments

To streamline claims, the following process updates have been made:

  • Certification Requirement: Documents must be certified (signed, dated, and officially sealed) by the Principal or an authorized Suraksha officer.
  • Submission Deadline: Claim documents must be submitted to any regional office of Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation General Limited (SLICGL) within 90 days from the date of hospitalization or death.
  • Required Documents: Eligibility for the benefit is contingent upon the submission of the claim form and original copies of the required documents
