The Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education has declared May 5th and May 6th as special holidays for schools across Sri Lanka and reopening on Wednesday, May 7th, 2025. This decision is to facilitate the upcoming Local Government Elections scheduled for Tuesday, May 6th, 2025.
The announcement was made via a circular (Reference: ED/09/12/06/05/01-2025) issued today by the Secretary to the Ministry of Education. The circular states that the holidays are necessary because numerous government schools and government-approved private schools will serve as polling stations and vote counting centers.
