Ministry of Education Announces New Timetable for Muslim Schools

The Ministry of Education has officially released a revised timetable for all Muslim schools across Sri Lanka, effective from the next academic phase. This directive, issued on December 16, 2025, aligns with the broader national education reforms aimed at standardizing school hours while accommodating cultural and religious practices.

According to a circular signed by Ministry Secretary Nalaka Kaluwewe, the new schedule replaces previous guidelines and will apply to Grades 6 through 13. The primary goal is to ensure consistency in the implementation of activity-based learning under the new curriculum structure.

Revised School Hours

The Ministry has structured the weekly schedule to provide flexibility for religious observances, particularly on Fridays. The standard operating hours are as follows:

• Mondays: 7:15 AM to 1:45 PM.
• Tuesday to Thursday: 7:15 AM to 2:35 PM.
• Fridays: 7:15 AM to 11:15 AM.

Tuesday to Thursday Timetable

For the mid-week days, the schedule is extended to 8 periods to accommodate a prayer break, concluding at 2:35 PM.

Friday Timetable

On Fridays, the school day is shortened to 4 periods to allow students and staff to attend Jumu’ah prayers, concluding at 11:15 AM.
