The Ministry of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government has officially announced a revision to the mileage allowances for public officers using private vehicles for official duties.
According to Public Administration Circular 10/2026, issued on April 9, 2026, the Cabinet of Ministers approved these amendments during a meeting held earlier this year on January 12.
Updated Rates
The new rates, which amend sub-section 8:2 of Chapter XIV of the Establishments Code, are categorized by vehicle type:
| Vehicle Type | Rate per Kilometer |
| Petrol or Diesel Motor Vehicles | Rs. 40.00 |
| Electric Vehicles (EVs) | Rs. 20.00 |
| Motorcycles | Rs. 10.00 |
Key Implementation Details
- Effective Date: The revised rates are backdated to take effect from April 1, 2026.
- Universal Application: These figures will replace all existing mileage rates currently mentioned throughout the Establishments Code.
- Commuted Allowances: The circular specifies that commuted allowances already including transport payments will not be revised under these new provisions.
- Verification: For special official travel where mileage is granted instead of additional fuel, competent authorities are required to personally verify that the travel was actually completed by the officer.
