The Department of Measurement Units, Standards and Services, under the Ministry of Trade, Commerce, Food Safety, and Cooperative Development, has announced an open competitive examination for the recruitment of Grade III Metrology Experimental Officers. Applications for this exam, scheduled for November 2025, are open from 9:00 AM on August 4, 2025, until 9:00 AM on September 1, 2025.
Position and Service Conditions This is a permanent, pensionable post, and the officer must contribute to the Widows’ and Orphans’ Pension Scheme / Widowers’ and Orphans’ Pension Scheme. Officers who join the service in a non-official language medium must obtain the required official language proficiency during their probationary period, in accordance with Public Administration Circular 18/2020 and its related circulars.
Salary Scale and Efficiency Bars The monthly salary scale for the position is Rs. 53,060 – 10×800 – 11×1190 – 10×1320 – 5×1350 – Rs. 94,100, according to Public Administration Circular 10/2025. The salary will be paid from the date of appointment as per the provisions of Schedule II of this circular. Officers must pass three efficiency bar exams: the first within three years of being recruited to Grade III, the second within three years of being promoted to Grade II, and the third within five years of being promoted to Grade I.
Eligibility Criteria
- Educational Qualifications: A Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree from a recognized university, with Physics studied for a minimum of two years.
- Other Qualifications:
- Must be a citizen of Sri Lanka.
- Age must be between 22 and 35 years on the closing date for applications (born between September 1, 1990, and September 1, 2003).
- Must be of excellent character and good health.
- Applicants with special needs must mention this on the application and submit copies of the relevant medical certificates.
Recruitment Method The selection process will involve a written examination and a structured interview. The written exam will be conducted by the Commissioner-General of Examinations. To pass the written exam, a candidate must score 40% or more in each subject. Candidates who pass all subjects will be called for a structured interview, with the number of candidates not exceeding twice the number of vacancies. The structured interview is worth a maximum of 25 marks. The final selection will be based on the total marks from both the written exam and the interview.
Written Examination Details The exam will be held in Colombo only. It will be conducted in Sinhala, Tamil, and English, and the chosen language cannot be changed later. The exam consists of two papers, each with a duration of one hour and a total of 100 marks:
- Intelligence Test: This paper will contain 50 multiple-choice and short-answer questions to assess logical reasoning, mathematical problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- General Knowledge: This paper will also have 50 multiple-choice and short-answer questions, testing general knowledge of fundamental Physics concepts and an understanding of the political, social, cultural, and economic trends in Sri Lanka.
Application Procedure Applications must be submitted online only through the Sri Lanka Examinations Department website, www.doenets.lk, under “Our Services” and “Online Applications – Recruitment Exams/E. B. Exams”. The online application must be completed in English. The application period is from 9:00 AM on August 4, 2025, to 9:00 PM on September 1, 2025. Applicants must pay an examination fee of Rs. 600. The fee can be paid via credit card, a debit card with internet transaction facility, Bank of Ceylon online banking, or at any Bank of Ceylon branch. Incomplete applications will be rejected without notification.
