The Ministry of Education, Higher Education, and Vocational Education has announced the call for applications for the 2026 Japanese Government (MEXT) National Institute of Technology (KOSEN) Scholarships. The scholarship offers Sri Lankan students the opportunity to pursue specialized technical education in Japan.
Eligible applicants must be Sri Lankan citizens born on or after April 2, 2001, with at least three passes in the G.C.E. A/L 2023 (or 2024) Mathematical Stream subjects—Chemistry, Physics, and Combined Mathematics. Candidates should not be enrolled as internal students at any state university in Sri Lanka.
Scholarship recipients will initially undergo a one-year intensive preparatory course in Japanese language, mathematics, and other relevant subjects, followed by a three-year specialized education program at a National Institute of Technology. Those majoring in Maritime Engineering will undergo three and a half years of specialization. The total scholarship period, including preparatory education, is four years (up to March 2030) or four and a half years (up to September 2030) for maritime engineering.
The monthly stipend is 117,000 yen, with additional regional allowances for students based in designated regions. Tuition, entrance examination, and matriculation fees will be fully covered by MEXT. Airfare to and from Japan will also be provided, while accommodation costs must be borne by the student.

All instructions will be conducted in Japanese, and applicants must be willing to learn the language and adapt to life in Japan.
Applications must be submitted online through https://foreignscholarships.mohe.gov.lk/ by May 13, 2025. No postal submissions are required. Applicants may apply for only one program, either the Undergraduate or the National Institute of Technology scholarship, but not both.
Candidates will be required to sit for a written examination and a structured interview organized by the Ministry in collaboration with the Japanese Embassy in Sri Lanka. Final selections will be announced by January 2026.
