The Department of Examinations of Sri Lanka successfully conducted the highly anticipated competitive Graduate Teaching Exam 2026 on May 24, 2026. The examination was held across 1,048 examination centers island-wide, marking one of the largest teacher recruitment drives in recent years.
The nationwide examination aims to address the growing shortage of teachers in Sinhala, Tamil, and English medium schools across both national and provincial education sectors.
More Than 163,000 Graduates Participate
According to the Department of Examinations, a total of 163,433 graduates appeared for the competitive examination this year.
Among them:
- 66,991 applicants were graduates currently employed in the public sector.
- 96,442 applicants were graduates from the private sector and unemployed categories.
- 323 special needs candidates were provided with special examination facilities to ensure accessibility and equal opportunity.
Officials stated that extensive logistical and administrative arrangements were made to ensure the smooth and successful conduct of the examination at all centers.
Government Expands Eligibility to Address Teacher Shortage
The teacher recruitment examination is considered a major step by the government to resolve the severe teacher shortage affecting schools across Sri Lanka.
A similar recruitment process planned in 2023 for public sector graduates faced legal obstacles, including:
- Three Fundamental Rights (FR) petitions filed before the Supreme Court.
- One related case filed in the Court of Appeal.
Following the resolution of these legal challenges, authorities broadened the recruitment process for the 2026 examination by allowing both public sector graduates and external graduates to apply.
Education sector analysts believe this move will help strengthen the national education system by filling long-standing vacancies in several subject areas and language mediums.
Focus on Strengthening Sri Lanka’s Education Sector
The government has identified teacher shortages as a critical issue impacting the quality of education in many regions. The successful completion of this large-scale recruitment examination is expected to accelerate the appointment of qualified graduates to schools in need of teaching staff.
Officials are expected to announce the next stages of the recruitment process, including results and interview schedules, in the coming months.
