The Department of Examinations has officially commenced the online application process for candidates intending to sit for the General Certificate of Education (G.C.E.) Advanced Level (A/L) Examination in 2025. The examination is scheduled to be held from November 10, 2025, to December 5, 2025.

Prospective private candidates must submit their applications exclusively through the official online portals. The application window is open from June 26, 2025, to midnight on July 21, 2025. Late submissions will not be accepted as the online system will be deactivated after the deadline.

How to Apply: A Two-Step Process

The application process is divided into two main steps to ensure a smooth and organized registration for all candidates.

Step 1: Registration and Obtaining a Reference Number

  1. Access the Portal: Applicants can initiate their application through the Department of Examinations’ official website (www.doenets.lk), the online exams portal (https://onlineexams.gov.lk/eic), or the “DoE” mobile application.
  2. Enter Details: Candidates must accurately fill in their personal information, select their preferred examination city and language medium, and choose their subjects.
  3. Receive Reference Number: Upon successful submission of these initial details, especially for those paying via a post office, a unique “Reference Number” will be generated. This number is crucial for the next step.

Step 2: Fee Payment and Application Download

  1. Payment Options: Examination fees can be paid at any post office or via any credit/debit card.
  2. Post Office Payment: If paying at a post office, present the Reference Number to the teller to make the payment.
  3. Online Payment: For credit/debit card payments, select the appropriate option on the payment method screen.
  4. Download Application: After a successful transaction, applicants will receive an SMS with a link to download their application. Alternatively, they can log back into the portal to download and print the PDF of their application. This printed copy should be kept safe for future reference.

Subject Selection and Important Guidelines

  • Core Subjects: A candidate is permitted to sit for a maximum of three main subjects.
  • Optional Subjects: In addition to the main subjects, candidates can apply for the Common General Test (Subject No. 12) and General English (Subject No. 13).
  • University Entrance: A minimum score of 30 is mandatory in the Common General Test for any candidate seeking admission to a Sri Lankan university. Those who have already achieved this score in a previous attempt are not required to retake the test.
  • General English: The result for General English will be noted on the A/L certificate but is not considered for university admission Z-scores.
  • Practical Examinations: Candidates taking subjects with practical components (Subject Nos. 28, 52-59, 65, 66) must attend both the written and practical exams to receive a result. No rescheduling will be allowed for missed practical exams.
  • Subject Streams: Candidates must select subject combinations in accordance with the Ministry of Education’s Circular No. 2016/13. Non-compliant subject combinations will result in the candidate being classified as “Non-stream,” and they will not be issued an Island Rank or District Rank.

Note: Fees paid for the examination are non-refundable and cannot be transferred to another examination.

Crucial Information for All Applicants

  • Single Application Only: Each candidate must submit only one application. Submitting multiple applications may lead to the cancellation of all applications and potential legal action. This rule applies even if discrepancies are found after results are released.
  • Identity Verification: All candidates must present a valid National Identity Card (NIC), passport, or driving license at the examination hall. Those without an NIC must apply for one immediately. Applicants who do not have an NIC at the time of application must visit the Department of Examinations in person to obtain a temporary identification number.
  • Prohibition for School Candidates: Government school students are strictly forbidden from applying as private candidates. Doing so will result in the cancellation of their results and a ban from future examinations.
  • Candidates with Special Needs: Applicants with special needs must declare their requirements in the “Candidates with Special Education Needs” section of the online form.

Corrections and Inquiries

Any necessary corrections to the admission card can be made online within seven days of its issuance. For any discrepancies or further inquiries, candidates are advised to contact the School Examinations Organization and Results Branch immediately.
