Foreign Leave Guidelines for Government School Students
Updated procedures for granting foreign leave to students travelling abroad with parents or guardians for personal requirements — applicable to Grades 1–13.

அரச பாடசாலைகளில் தரம் 1 முதல் தரம் 13 வரை மாணவர்கள் பெற்றோர் அல்லது பாதுகாவலருடன் வெளிநாடு செல்லும்போது வெளிநாட்டு விடுமுறை வழங்கும் நடைமுறைகள் சுற்றறிக்கை 18/2026 மூலம் அறிவிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன. 31 நாட்கள் வரை அதிபர் அனுமதிக்கலாம், அதற்கு மேல் உரிய அதிகாரிகளின் அனுமதி தேவை. விண்ணப்பத்தை இரண்டு வாரங்களுக்கு முன் சமர்ப்பிக்க வேண்டும்.

| Over 31 Days – 6 Months | Zonal Director of Education | The application must be forwarded with the recommendation of the school principal. |
| Over 6 Months – 1 Year | Provincial Director of Education | Approval must be obtained through the relevant education authorities. |
| Over 1 Year – 2 Years | Relevant National / Provincial Authority | National schools: Director of Education (national schools). Provincial schools: Provincial Director of Education. |
The parent or legal guardian should complete the prescribed application included as Annex 01 of the circular.
The completed application should be submitted through the principal of the school attended by the student.
Details of the student, reason for travelling, destination country and requested leave period should be clearly stated.
The application should be submitted at least two weeks before the intended date of departure.
Students should not leave the country before receiving the required official approval.
- 🔸 Foreign leave for six months or more will not normally be granted during the academic year in which a student is admitted to Grade 1.
- 🔸 Special provisions may apply to children of government officers who are officially appointed or assigned to serve abroad.
- 🔸 Students receiving long-term foreign leave may be subject to additional conditions concerning continued schooling after returning to Sri Lanka.
- 🔸 A student should return to school within seven school days after the approved leave period ends.
- 🔸 A student who fails to return within the permitted period may be treated as having left the school from the eighth school day.
- 🔸 Re-admission may be considered according to available vacancies, applicable regulations and the relevant admission procedure.
