The Educational Publications Department has officially commenced the distribution of specialized activity books and modular learning materials for Grade 1 and Grade 6 students, marking a critical phase in the national education reforms set for 2026.
In a directive issued today, December 29, 2025, Commissioner General of Educational Publications D.A. Subhashini Dematagoda instructed all distribution center heads to prioritize the immediate delivery of these materials to ensure all students are prepared for the first term of the 2026 academic year.
Shift from Textbooks to Interactive Learning
Under the new reforms, traditional textbooks for these entry-level grades are being replaced by dynamic learning tools designed to foster practical skills rather than rote memorization.
- Grade 1: Students will receive six activity books covering new curriculum subjects. For the Mother Tongue subject, a supplementary reading book has also been included.
- Grade 6: The curriculum now features 15 compulsory subjects, with modular learning materials (modules) developed for 14 of them.
Specialized Modules and Skill Development
The reform introduces a tiered module system for Grade 6 to broaden student competencies:
- Further Learning Modules: Subjects like Mathematics (“Playing with Numbers”), Science, and ICT now include advanced modules to deepen student understanding.
- Transversal Skills: New modules focusing on social responsibility, such as “Manusath Mehevara” (Humanitarian Service), are now mandatory for all students to encourage social empathy and ethics.
- Applied Technology: Students will explore niche areas like the Tea Industry, Gem and Jewelry, and Electrical Technology through specialized modules distributed to schools.
Logistics and Sustainable Use
The Department has emphasized that these materials are also intended for teachers, ensuring educators have the necessary tools to lead activity-based classrooms.
Notably, the Grade 6 modules are designed for reuse. Principals have been instructed to cultivate “positive student attitudes” toward the preservation of these materials so they can be utilized by future cohorts. Distribution centers will utilize the existing textbook ordering database to determine the exact quantities needed for each school based on current enrollment figures.
