The Ministry of Education, Higher Education, and Vocational Education has unveiled the official School Calendar 2025 and Activities, outlining key academic schedules, holidays, and programs for government and government-approved private schools across the country.
Key Highlights of the School Calendar 2025
- Term Dates:
- Sinhala/Tamil Schools:
- First Term: 27th January – 9th May (phased with short vacations).
- Second Term: 14th May – 7th August.
- Third Term: 18th August – 19th December.
- Muslim Schools: Adjusted dates to accommodate religious observances, ending on 19th December.
- Sinhala/Tamil Schools:
- Reduced Academic Days: Due to public holidays and exam schedules, schools will operate for 181 days instead of the standard 210 days in 2025.
- Major Examinations:
- G.C.E. O/L 2024: 17th–26th March.
- G.C.E. A/L 2025: 21st October–15th November.
- Grade 5 Scholarship Exam: 10th August.
- Public Holidays: Includes cultural and religious observances like Sinhala/Tamil New Year (14th–15th April), Vesak (12th–13th May), and Eid festivals.
Notable School Activities – School Calendar 2025
- Sports: Zonal and national tournaments from January to October.
- Awareness Programs: World Health Day (7th April), Mental Health Day (10th October), and others.
- Cultural Events: All-island competitions in music, dance, drama, and robotics.
- Commemorations: Dr. C.W.W. Kannangara’s 141st birthday (13th October).
Flexibility for Provinces
Provincial education authorities may adjust the calendar locally, adhering to the minimum 181-day requirement and avoiding conflicts with national exams.
Important Notes
- Schools must prioritize academic activities in the third term, deferring prize-giving ceremonies and trips to earlier terms.
- Internal evaluations and teacher report book updates are mandated.
