The Department of Examinations has released the performance report for the 2024 G.C.E. Ordinary Level (O/L) Examination, revealing that 73.45% of school candidates (first attempt) qualified for the G.C.E. Advanced Level (A/L) examination.
A total of 322,704 school candidates sat for five or more subjects, with 237,026 meeting the A/L entry requirement. Additionally, 4.15% obtained nine “A” passes, while 2.34% failed all subjects despite appearing for six or more.
By province, the Southern Province recorded the highest qualification rate at 78.21%, followed closely by the Eastern Province (77.36%) and the Western Province (77.11%). The North Central Province recorded the lowest at 71.59%.
At the district level, Ampara achieved the highest percentage of candidates qualifying for A/L (81.13%), while Trincomalee reported the lowest at 68.75%.
Education zones such as Kandy (85.44%), Batticaloa (81.92%), and Kalmunai (81.77%) topped the performance charts, whereas Dimbulagala recorded the lowest pass rate of 57.22%
