Deputy Minister of Education and Higher Education, Dr. Madhura Senevirathna, announced in Parliament today (June 20) that the Grade 5 Scholarship Examination will not be suspended immediately, reaffirming the government’s decision to proceed with the exam in 2029 without any alterations.
Responding to a query raised by MP Dayasiri Jayasekara, Dr. Senevirathna clarified that while the exam will be held as planned, a special committee will be appointed in 2028 to assess the future of the examination and decide whether it should be continued beyond 2029.
He also highlighted ongoing efforts by the Department of Examinations to develop strategies aimed at minimizing the undue pressure placed on students.
Furthermore, the Deputy Minister emphasized that the government is taking steps to systematically reduce inequalities between schools and alleviate the intense competition that currently surrounds the Grade 5 Scholarship Examination.
