The Ministry of Education, Higher Education has announced the appointment of Dedicated Officers to Combat Ragging in State Universities to support students facing ragging-related incidents. This initiative aims to provide immediate assistance and guidance to affected students, ensuring a safer campus environment.
Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Dr. Madura Seneviratne, stated that these officers will operate under the supervision of each university’s governing council. To finalize the implementation details, the ministry has called a special meeting with all Vice Chancellors of state universities in Colombo, to be chaired by Minister of Education and Prime Minister, Dr. Harini Amarasuriya.
The meeting will also address the ongoing investigation into the recent death of a second-year student from the Faculty of Technology at Sabaragamuwa University. Dr. Seneviratne noted that further updates on the probe will be shared during the discussion.
This move underscores the government’s commitment to tackling ragging and ensuring student safety across Sri Lanka’s higher education institutions.
