Sri Lanka has officially released the Final Report of the Census of Population and Housing 2024, marking a significant milestone in the country’s statistical and national planning framework. The report, published by the Department of Census and Statistics, provides comprehensive and updated insights into the country’s population, housing, and socio-economic conditions.
The 2024 Census stands out as the 15th national census conducted in Sri Lanka and introduces a major technological advancement. For the first time in the country’s history, data collection was carried out using tablet computers and smartphones, replacing traditional paper-based questionnaires. This shift has enhanced data accuracy, efficiency, and timeliness in processing.
According to the report, the census covers a wide range of critical areas including:
- Population size, growth, and distribution
- Migration patterns (both internal and international)
- Demographic and social characteristics
- Education and literacy levels
- Economic activities and employment
- Marital status and fertility trends
- Household and family structures
- Housing conditions and facilities
The report consists of 12 detailed chapters, offering valuable data for policymakers, researchers, educators, and planners. It is expected to play a key role in shaping future development policies, resource allocation, and national planning strategies.
The Director General of the Department emphasized that the success of this large-scale national operation was made possible through the dedication of government officials, field staff, and the cooperation of the general public. Support from international organizations such as UNFPA also contributed to the successful implementation of the census.
Importantly, the Census of Population and Housing 2024 provides updated baseline data following a period of significant economic and social changes in Sri Lanka, making it a crucial reference for evidence-based decision-making.
