The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a significant proposal to provide an annual allowance of Rs. 7,500/- to teachers serving in registered religious schools across Sri Lanka, effective from the year 2026. This decision, put forth by the Minister of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs, aims to recognize and encourage the invaluable service of these teachers who contribute to the spiritual development of society.
The allowance, which is inclusive of both a teachers’ allowance and a uniform allowance, will be extended to educators in Buddhist, Hindu, Islam, Christian, and Catholic religious schools.
According to the cabinet decision, religious education is seen as crucial for guiding society towards spiritual development. The provision of these allowances is intended to ensure the undisturbed service of teachers in religious schools, who often work without personal expectations, and to foster the overall progress of religious education for the betterment of society.
