The Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education has announced that Rs. 500 million has been allocated under the Secondary Education Sector Improvement Program (SESIP) – 2025 to strengthen science education in schools across the country.
Allocation for Laboratories
The funds will be provided as a school-based donation to Type 1AB and Type 1C schools for the purchase of laboratory equipment and chemicals. The allocations are currently being transferred by the Science Section of the Ministry directly to the accounts of respective school development societies.
Allocations have been determined according to the student population of each school, with a maximum grant of Rs. 1 million per school and a minimum of Rs. 40,000.
Objective of the Initiative
The key aim of this initiative is to:
- Improve Science education across the island.
- Enhance practical learning opportunities for students.
- Strengthen laboratory infrastructure to support education reforms planned in the near future.
The Ministry emphasized that this investment will play a vital role in creating a stronger foundation for science learning and ensuring students gain hands-on experience, which is crucial for future educational and professional pathways.
