Revised National Curriculum Framework Overview
The Ministry of Education, in conjunction with the National Institute of Education (NIE), has officially released the Revised National Curriculum Framework for General Education in Sri Lanka. This policy document outlines a comprehensive transformation across primary, junior secondary, and senior secondary schooling (Grades 1 to 13). The revision establishes a learner-centered, competency-driven, and credit-based modular education structure designed to align schooling with modern economic realities, vocational integration, and 21st-century skills.
Key Structural Revisions Across School Stages
Retaining the three Key Stages (Key Stage 1: Grades 1–2, Key Stage 2: Grades 3–4, and Key Stage 3: Grade 5), the primary curriculum emphasizes foundational literacy, numeracy, environmental activities, and basic life skills under an activity-based approach with reduced desk work. The framework also outlines a phased discontinuation of the high-stakes Grade 5 Scholarship Examination in favor of school-level competency monitoring.
Junior secondary education introduces a term-based modular structure. Key updates include:
- Credit System: 1 credit corresponds to 10 notional learning hours (covering direct instruction, practicals, and independent study).
- Integrated Social Studies: Merges History, Geography, and Civic Education into an integrated curriculum area.
- Electives & Practical Learning: Introduction of Applied Technology, ICT, Entrepreneurship, and term-by-term elective modules.
- Career Aptitude Testing: Administration of a school-level psychometric and skills assessment at the end of Grade 9 to guide subsequent academic and vocational pathways.
The curriculum restructures G.C.E. O/L preparation into seven core essential subjects assessed through national summative examinations, alongside three elective baskets evaluated through school-level continuous assessments. Basket 3 explicitly introduces 12 applied vocational study modules (including Automotive Studies, Electrical & Electronic Studies, and Hospitality) to foster practical career readiness.
Collegiate education expands across five broad learning areas: Science, Technology, Business & Entrepreneurship, Humanities & Social Sciences/Aesthetics, and Vocational. Curricula are structured with 70% specialization subjects, 20% interdisciplinary modules, and 10% common compulsory modules (General English, Law & Ethics, and Social Harmony). The vocational stream provides pathways leading to recognized NVQ Level 4 certification upon completion of Grade 13.
