The Ministry of Education has initiated a comprehensive review of education degrees awarded by private universities and affiliated higher education institutions in Sri Lanka, raising questions about their quality and suitability for recruitment into the Sri Lanka Teachers’ Service.
The announcement was made by Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Higher Education, and Vocational Education, Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, during a meeting with representatives from teacher and principal unions held at the Ministry premises in Isurupaya.
Dr. Amarasuriya acknowledged growing concerns regarding the academic standards of these private qualifications and their recognition for public sector recruitment. “Issues have arisen concerning the qualifications of graduates with educationist degrees from these institutions, particularly regarding their eligibility and suitability for recruitment into the Sri Lanka Teachers’ Service,” she stated.
While recent appointments to the Teachers’ Service were made in line with regulations approved by the previous administration, the Prime Minister emphasized that these private qualifications are now under renewed and rigorous scrutiny.
She assured union representatives that the findings of this formal review will be instrumental in shaping future recruitment policies, ensuring that only those with credible and quality-assured qualifications are considered for teaching positions in government schools.
Deputy Labour Minister Mahinda Jayasinghe, Acting Education Secretary Amal Edirisuriya, and other senior officials were also present at the meeting.
