The Ministry of Education has announced the launch of Project “Prathishta”, a national programme aimed at rebuilding and restoring schools severely affected by the recent disaster.
Secretary to the Ministry, Nalaka Kaluwewa, stated that any organisation, group, or individual is welcome to contribute to the initiative. All coordination related to donations, rebuilding, and support activities will be centrally managed through the Ministry of Education.
To facilitate public engagement, the Ministry has introduced a dedicated hotline: 1988, along with two WhatsApp numbers for inquiries and contributions: 077 65 823 65 and 071 99 323 25. All activities under the project will be overseen by the Ministry’s Disaster Management Committee.
According to the latest data released by the Ministry, over 1,506 schools across Sri Lanka have been affected.
The provinces reporting the highest levels of damage include:
- Northern Province – 330 schools
- Western Province – 266 schools
- Eastern Province – 221 schools
- Central Province – 136 schools
- North Western Province – 136 schools
- Uva Province – 129 schools
- Sabaragamuwa Province – 115 schools

The Ministry noted that the assessment is ongoing and the list of affected schools is still being updated.
It was further confirmed that two schools in the Badulla District have been completely destroyed due to the disaster.
Project “Prathishta” aims to mobilise national support to ensure the swift restoration of the country’s education infrastructure and to help affected students return to normal learning environments as soon as possible.
