The General Certificate of Education Ordinary Level (GCE O/L Exam) is one of the most important academic milestones for students in Sri Lanka. Conducted by the Department of Examinations, this exam marks the completion of secondary education and serves as a gateway to higher studies or vocational training.

What is the GCE O/L Exam?

The GCE O/L Exam is typically taken by students in Grade 11, usually at the age of 16. It assesses students’ knowledge and skills across a range of subjects, and passing this exam is a prerequisite for advancing to GCE Advanced Level (A/L) or pursuing other educational and career pathways.

Subjects in the GCE O/L Exam

Students are required to sit for a minimum of nine subjects, including:

The O/L exam is a crucial step in Sri Lanka’s education system as it determines a student’s future study options:

  • Entry to GCE A/L: Students who pass with good grades can proceed to study their preferred stream (Science, Commerce, Arts, or Technology).
  • Technical & Vocational Training: Those who do not pursue A/L can opt for NVQ (National Vocational Qualification) programs, diplomas, or technical courses.
  • Job Opportunities: Some government and private-sector jobs accept O/L qualifications for entry-level positions.

Exam Preparation Tips

1. Start Early & Plan a Study Schedule

Students should begin their revision well in advance and follow a structured timetable to cover all subjects systematically.
