The General Certificate of Education Ordinary Level (GCE O/L Exam) is one of the most important academic milestones for students in Sri Lanka. Conducted by the Department of Examinations, this exam marks the completion of secondary education and serves as a gateway to higher studies or vocational training.

What is the GCE O/L Exam?

The GCE O/L Exam is typically taken by students in Grade 11, usually at the age of 16. It assesses students’ knowledge and skills across a range of subjects, and passing this exam is a prerequisite for advancing to GCE Advanced Level (A/L) or pursuing other educational and career pathways.

Grading System and Passing Criteria

The grading system for the GCE O/L exam is as follows:

To qualify for GCE A/L studies, students must pass Mathematics, their First Language (Sinhala/Tamil), and at least three other subjects.

The O/L exam is a crucial step in Sri Lanka’s education system as it determines a student’s future study options:

  • Entry to GCE A/L: Students who pass with good grades can proceed to study their preferred stream (Science, Commerce, Arts, or Technology).
