The Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education has issued two new circulars outlining the phased implementation of sweeping new educational reforms and mandatory school timetables for all students from Grade 1 to 13, beginning in 2026.
The reforms introduce a new, module and credit-based curriculum for the Junior Secondary Section (Grades 6-9).
Key Implementation Timeline
The new curriculum (NS) will be rolled out to the following grades, with the old curriculum (OS) remaining in place for others:
- Grade 1: New curriculum implemented starting in 2026.
- Grade 6: New curriculum implemented starting in 2026.
- Grade 10: New curriculum to be introduced in 2028.
- G.C.E. O/L Examination (NS): Students starting Grade 6 with the new curriculum in 2026 will sit for the exam in 2031. Students starting Grade 10 with the new curriculum in 2028 will sit for the exam in 2029.
