The Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education has officially called for public opinions on a key committee report aimed at improving the quality of education services across the country.
This initiative follows a proposal to establish the Sri Lanka Education Council (SLEC), as recommended by the Hon. Prime Minister and the Hon. Minister of Education. The proposed council is expected to play a central role in regulating and uplifting the standards of education in Sri Lanka.
Key Objectives of the Proposed Education Council
According to the report, the SLEC will focus on several critical areas:
- Establishing a comprehensive framework for professional development and registration of educators
- Ensuring quality assurance and accreditation of educational programmes and institutions
- Standardizing qualifications for recruitment, promotions, and training
- Promoting professionalism and ethical conduct among education professionals
- Producing qualified bilingual educators to expand learning opportunities
- Enhancing unity and cooperation within the education sector
- Acting as a mediator between education professionals and the government
Expected Functions
The proposed council is also expected to:
- Regulate teacher training institutions and colleges of education
- Define minimum qualifications for educators
- Issue professional licenses
- Maintain a code of ethics for education professionals
- Provide policy recommendations to the government
Public Consultation Now Open
The decision to seek public feedback was made during the sixth meeting of the Ministerial Consultative Committee on Education, Higher Education, and Vocational Affairs. The ministry now invites views and suggestions from the general public regarding the recommendations presented by the expert committee.
