The Ministry of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources has announced the opening of applications for Marine Engineering Assistant positions, inviting candidates to compete for ten (10) permanent vacancies in the Sri Lanka Technological Service.
Position Overview
The Marine Engineering Assistant role carries significant responsibilities in Sri Lanka’s maritime sector, including:
- Conducting inspections and providing seaworthiness certificates for fishing vessels
- Assessing vessels under construction at approved boatyards
- Providing technical reports for vessel registration and insurance
- Inspecting traditional fishing vessels
- Evaluating vessel design specifications and accessories
- Conducting quality testing on departmental vehicles
Eligibility Requirements
Educational Qualifications
Candidates must have:
- G.C.E. (A/L) passes in three subjects, including two from Pure/Applied/Combined Mathematics and Physics/Engineering Technology/Science for Technology
- G.C.E. (O/L) passes in six subjects with credits in language, science, mathematics, and one additional subject
Professional Qualifications
Applicants need one of the following:
- NDT in Mechanical/Marine Engineering from University of Moratuwa or Hardy Technical College, Ampara
- Diploma in Mechanical Engineering from NAITA
- Diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology from Open University of Sri Lanka
- Advanced Diploma in Mechanical Engineering from SLIIT
- Diploma in Naval Engineering from Naval and Maritime Academy
Other Requirements
- Sri Lankan citizenship
- Age between 18-30 years (born between July 25, 1995, and July 25, 2007)
- Current employment in a pensionable public service position
- Excellent character and physical fitness for service anywhere in Sri Lanka
- No disciplinary issues under Public Service Commission Circular No. 01/2020
Examination Structure
The selection process includes:
- Intelligence Test and Aptitude (1 hour, 100 marks, 40% pass mark)
- Subject-Related Technical Test (2 hours, 100 marks, 40% pass mark)
The technical test covers environmental topics, scientific discoveries, general science knowledge, and subject-specific structured questions.

Candidates must complete applications online in English only, paying an examination fee of Rs. 600 through various methods including bank cards, online banking, or Bank of Ceylon branches.
The Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources noted that applications submitted under the February 2, 2024 gazette notification remain valid for this recruitment cycle.
