The Open University of Sri Lanka (OUSL) has announced a major recruitment drive for academic staff within its Department of Secondary and Tertiary Education, Faculty of Education. The university is calling for applications for the posts of
- Lecturer (Probationary)
- Lecturer (Unconfirmed)
- Senior Lecturer Grade II
- Senior Lecturer Grade I.
Applications are currently being entertained from suitably qualified candidates and must be submitted on or before November 21, 2025.
Focus on Advanced Qualifications
The required qualifications emphasize strong academic standing, particularly in the field of Education.
For the entry-level position of Lecturer (Probationary), candidates are primarily sought if they possess:
- A Bachelor of Education (Honours) Degree with a First or Second Class (Upper Division).
Alternative criteria are accepted for candidates with a BEd (Honours) with a Lower Division or any other degree with at least Second Class Honours, provided they also hold a relevant advanced degree, such as:
- A Doctoral Degree in the field of Education.
- A Master’s Degree in Education obtained after a full-time course of study of at least 24 months with a research component (thesis/dissertation).
- A full-time Master’s Degree in Education of a minimum of 18 months duration with at least 60 credits, including not less than 15 credits of research.
Higher-grade positions (Lecturer Unconfirmed and Senior Lecturer grades) require similar foundational academic qualifications alongside specific postgraduate achievements and requisite years of experience in university-level teaching, professional practice, or research.
Remuneration and Benefits Highlights
The successful appointees will be placed on the University Grants Commission (UGC) approved salary scale U-AC 3, with competitive monthly salaries and allowances, effective from April 1, 2025, according to Commission Circular No. 02/2025.
Notable starting basic salary steps (plus allowances) include:
- Lecturer (Probationary): Rs. 94,400 per month (plus Academic Allowance of 91% + Rs. 1,200).
- Senior Lecturer Grade I: Rs. 160,520 per month (plus Academic Allowance of 116% + Rs. 2,200).
Other key benefits:
- Pension & Provident Fund: Appointees contribute 10% of their salary to the Provident Fund, while the University contributes 8% to the Pension Scheme, 7% to the Provident Fund, and 3% to the Employees Trust Fund.
- Sabbatical Leave: Senior Lecturers Grade II and above are eligible for one year of sabbatical leave with full pay upon completing seven years of service, including air passage for self and spouse if proceeding abroad.
