The University Grants Commission (UGC) has announced the commencement of online applications for admission to Sri Lankan universities for the academic year 2024/2025. Eligible candidates who have met the minimum requirements at the G.C.E. (Advanced Level) Examination 2024 can submit their applications from May 9 to May 30, 2025, exclusively through the UGC’s official website
Key Admission Requirements
To qualify, candidates must have:
- ‘S’ grades in all three approved subjects in one sitting, within a maximum of three attempts.
- A minimum of 30% in the Common General Paper.
Candidates who fail to meet the 30% threshold for the Common General Paper may use a previous attempt’s result (within three attempts) or re-sit the exam to qualify for registration.

- Online Submission: Applications must be submitted via the UGC website.
- Handbook Purchase: The *University Admissions Handbook 2024/2025* (Rs. 1,000) is available at UGC offices, designated distributors island-wide, or by post.
- Support for Applicants: Free online application facilities are provided at Open University Regional Centers and ITDLH hubs for those without internet access.
Important Notes
- NIC Mandatory: A valid National Identity Card is required for application.
- Disqualifications: Students with prior registrations in state universities, exceeding three A/L attempts, or holding foreign scholarships are ineligible.
- Practical Tests: Courses like Architecture, Music, and Sports Science require additional aptitude tests.
Selection Process
Candidates can select up to 125 Uni-Codes (course-university combinations) in order of preference. The UGC emphasizes marking the maximum eligible choices to optimize selection chances.
