Professor Sampath Amaratunga, former Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC), has issued a critical advisory urging students and parents not to share GCE A/L 2024 results on social media platforms. The warning comes as the Department of Examinations releases the results today, April 26, 2025, for the examinations held from November 25 to December 31, 2024. Prof. Amaratunga highlighted the risks of identity misuse, which could complicate the university application process.
Risks of Sharing GCE A/L 2024 Results on Social Media
In a statement to the Daily Mirror, Prof. Amaratunga emphasized that examination result sheets are sensitive documents containing unique identifiers, such as the exam index number. Sharing these details publicly could lead to misuse by unauthorized individuals. “There is a chance someone else can fill the application for university admission using that information,” he cautioned. Such incidents could delay the university application process, requiring time-consuming rectification by the UGC and Department of Examinations.
He noted several reported cases where result details were misused for fraudulent activities, including:
- Applying to foreign universities.
- Securing scholarships under false pretenses.
- Engaging in other sensitive activities by altering the genuine owner’s information.
“Sharing copies of these documents can compromise the identity of the genuine owner,” Prof. Amaratunga warned, urging caution to protect students’ futures.
