Ministry of Defence & Department of Meteorology Call Applications – Meteorological Observer Trainee 2026
The Ministry of Defence and the Department of Meteorology, Sri Lanka have called applications for the Open Competitive Examination for the post of Meteorological Observer / Communicator (Trainee Grade) under the Sri Lanka Technological Service (SLTS) for 2026. A total of 47 vacancies are available. Online applications open on 13 July 2026 at 9:00 AM and close on 13 August 2026 at 9:00 PM. The application fee is Rs. 600, payable online or at Bank of Ceylon branches. Applicants must be aged 18–30 as at the closing date, hold G.C.E. O/L with Credit passes in Sinhala/Tamil/English, Science and Mathematics in one sitting, and G.C.E. A/L with three subjects including Physics and a relevant Mathematics/Science combination. The written examination will be held in Colombo in October 2026, comprising an Intelligence Test and a Technical Paper on Physics and Electronics. Selected trainees receive a monthly allowance and must sign a bond for five years of service. The post is permanent, pensionable, with a three-year probation.

🎓 Educational Qualifications
📘 G.C.E. Ordinary Level (O/L)
Passed in six subjects in one sitting with Credit (C) passes in:
- Sinhala / Tamil / English
- Science
- Mathematics
- One other subject
📗 G.C.E. Advanced Level (A/L)
Passed three subjects in one sitting. The subject combination must be one of the following:
- Option A: Physics + Pure Mathematics + Applied Mathematics
- Option B: Physics + one Mathematics subject (Pure / Applied / Combined Math) + one Science/Technology subject (Chemistry / Agriculture / IT / Computer Science)

Training Duration
Selected candidates will undergo a two-year training period with monthly allowances paid throughout.

Candidates will be appointed to Grade III of the Meteorological Observer / Communicator position in the SLTS.

Bond Requirement: Trainees must sign a bond committing to complete training and serve the department for at least five years. Failure to do so requires payment of a penalty of Rs. 250,000 plus the full cost of government expenditure on training.
