The Department of Census and Statistics (DCS) has released the preliminary findings of the Census of Population and Housing 2024, presenting key insights into the demographic structure of Sri Lanka. According to the report, the total population of Sri Lanka stands at 21,142,000, marking the country’s first full enumeration census since 2012.
District-wise Population Highlights
The population distribution across Sri Lanka’s 25 administrative districts reveals stark contrasts between urban, semi-urban, and rural areas:
- Colombo remains the most populous district with 2,388,000 people, reflecting its continued role as the nation’s economic and administrative hub.
- Gampaha follows closely with 2,443,000, showing significant urban growth in the Western Province.
- Kurunegala and Kandy, major population centers in the North Western and Central Provinces respectively, report 1,724,000 and 1,376,000 residents.
- Jaffna, which saw disruptions in previous census efforts due to civil conflict, recorded a population of 608,000, a notable recovery since 2012.
- Mullaitivu, one of the least populated districts, stands at 106,000, reflecting the region’s rural nature and post-conflict migration patterns.

The Department of Census and Statistics emphasized that the preliminary figures are subject to minor revisions as data verification and tabulation continue.
